Description: The Harding Memorial is the burial location of President Warren G. Harding and First Lady Florence Kling Harding. It is located in Marion, Ohio at the southeast corner of Vernon Heights Boulevard and Delaware Avenue. Construction of the memorial begun in 1926 with funds raised by popular subscriptions and was completed in the early winter of 1927. The memorial was formally dedicated on June 16, 1931, by President Hoover and Governor George White of Ohio. The structure is constructed of white Georgia marble and was designed by Henry Hornbustle, Edward Mellon, and Erie Fisher Wood of Pittsburgh. It is 103’ in diameter and 53’ in height. The open design honors the Hardings’ wishes that they be buried outside. The structure is circular in form with a free-standing Doric colonnade on the exterior. In the approximate center of the monument, on a circular plot open to the sky, are the sarcophagi of the Hardings, covered by two slabs of emerald pearl Labrador granite. Description: This image shows the graves at the Warren G. Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio. Warren G. Harding was the 29th President of the United States. For the most part, Harding proved to be a poor manager of the federal government. He delegated authority to his cabinet officials. These men became known as the ""Ohio Gang."" Unfortunately for Harding and the country, many of these men proved to be unscrupulous, causing a great deal of distrust among the American people for their government officials. It is unclear, however, how much Harding knew of his subordinates' actions. Perhaps, the worst scandal of Harding's administration was the Teapot Dome Scandal. Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall rented government lands to oil companies in return for personal loans. Fall was found guilty of this illegal action and was sentenced to prison in 1931. Adding to the corruption, Thomas Miller, chairman of the Office of Alien Property, accepted bribes, and Charles Forbes, the head of the Bureau of Veterans' Affairs, embezzled funds. At this same time, it became known that Harding commonly drank alcohol in the White House, although this was a direct violation of Prohibition. The American people also began to hear rumors of extramarital affairs that Harding engaged in, including one with a friend's wife, Carrie Fulton Phillips, and another with neighbor Nan Britton. Description: Photograph of the pond and fountain in Cleveland Square (now called Public Square) with the caption, "Decorations during Garfield Obsequies," from the collection of Louis Baus. President James A. Garfield, an Ohio native, was only in office for four months before he was shot by assassin Charles Guiteau on July 1, 1881. Garfield survived another two and a half months, but succumbed to complications from the wound on September 19, 1881. His body was transferred by funeral train to Cleveland, where he is buried in Lake View Cemetery. Baus, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was born in 1875. He began his career as a professional photographer doing studio work before becoming a staff photographer for the Cleveland Advocate in 1911. Baus worked for the paper, which was later purchased by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, for thirty-eight years until his death in 1949. He was also an avid collector of historic photographs. McKinley was shot by assassin Leon Czolgosz during a public appearance on September 6, 1901, and died of his wounds eight days later. He is buried in Canton, Ohio. Louis Baus, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was born in 1875. He began his career as a professional photographer doing studio work before becoming a staff photographer for the Cleveland Advocate in 1911. Baus worked for the paper, which was later purchased by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, for thirty-eight years until his death in 1949. He was also an avid collector of historic photographs.
